PHONE RECHARGE IN NIGERIA

The deregulation of telecommunication industry in the year 2001 gave birth to the licensed Global System for Mobile (GSM) operators (MTN, Globacom, MTEL etc.) and this increased the tele-density of the country from 25,000 lines inherited from the National Carrier (NITEL) to millions of Mobile Phone lines.Unlike in the era of the wired technology (NITEL) when the Post Paid Billing System (popularly called use now, pay later) was majorly used, the GSM operators introduced the Pre-Paid billing system by using the Recharge Cards and Electronic Vouchers of various denominations.

1. RECHARGE CARDS: These are pre-printed laminated cards coded with serial, batch and pin number-covered with foil-paint as tamper proof.
